Character's Full Name: Sawyer Kelly (Uses her mothers Maiden Name)
PB: Jessica Stroup
Character's Starting Level: 5
Character Age: 22

Physical Description:Though you’d hardly call her a girly girl, Sawyer pairs jeans and fitted tees with little feminine flourishes such as a colorful scarf or some eye-catching jewelry to keep her from falling into the tom-boy category. Her style borders on eclectic, Sawyer favoring bright colors with denim and leather that she's usually fished out of the bargain bin at a second-hand store. She likes to try and mix retro with modern and appears to change her hair as often as her clothes while her artistic flair is usually applied to make up rather than a sketch pad.

While she is an half-elf, Sawyer tends to take after her human mother more than her Elven father. She inherited her dark features and easy ability to tan though will often joke that if she doesn't get her daily dose of sun, that tan washes off in the shower. Her ears are slightly pointed however and standing at 5-10, she has a willowy figure that makes her look almost fragile at times.

Character's Species/Race (aka human, elf, dragonblood human, etc): Half-Elf

Character History (Pre-Veil): N/A

Post Veil History (if applicable):

  • Sawyer was born this side of the veil, product of a brief romance between her human mother and Elven father who had come through the veil from the Shadow World many years prior. Raised by her grandmother after her own mother died in a car accident when Sawyer was only two years old, her Grandmother told her that her father, a supposed member of the Knights, died while on a mission before she was born.

  • Raised in upstate New York, in the early years of her life, friends were not something that were easily made. She was a mousy child who struggled greatly to understand why she was different and why people treated her poorly for being so. She had to develop a thick skin in order to get through childhood and while she didn't have a natural inclination towards learning, books became her escape, fiction at first and then non-fiction as she got older.

  • As she got older, her interest in magic is what led her to find her place in the social hierarchy. Mostly self taught and practicing her craft with friends she made who had similar interests, magic became another thing that made her different, especially with her living in an area that had low numbers of Shadowkind and yet, thanks in part to her Grandmother, it was something else that made her special in her mind.

  • Opportunities to study were limited by a lack of financial stability, Sawyer even when she was in high school, moving from job to job - almost always mundane things to pay bills while developing her abilities in her own time. She's not exactly a novice in her craft as a result but she's hardly excelled the way she might have had she been able to commit time, money and energy to taking it on full time.

  • While that story of her parentage is based in truth; Her father was a member of the Knights and he did encounter her mother during a mission where she offered the party her assistance and they had a brief affair, her father not only didn't die but is completely unaware of Sawyer's existence, a fact that Sawyer discovered in the days leading up to her grandmothers death.

N.B. I have no preconceived ideas about who or what her father is. This is all what she has been told and what her mother was led to believe. Her father could have lied and said he was a part of the Knights when he wasn't. He could have been a Knight and died between her birth and her discovery that he hadn't died when she'd been told he had. He could well be a Knight but she'd never find him because he's not based in London and would never have reason for their paths to cross. If you want to do something with it, go crazy but otherwise I'll be keeping his identity vague.

  • Sawyer would not immediately seek out the Knights after her grandmothers death. She'd spend some six months sorting through her grandmothers belongings, packing up the house to be sold and working through her grief and betrayal in silence until she can figure out what her next move in. In the end however, the Knights do seem like the next logical step for her and despite some friends, she has limited reasons for sticking around her hometown any longer.

Personality and Psychology: Despite a life that seems to be peppered with loss and lies, Sawyer manages to seem surprisingly well adjusted, mostly due to the fact that she has a tendency to compartmentalize every part of her life. Anything deemed too painful gets shoved into a metaphorical box for her to deal with at a time when she's able to, which more often than not means, never. This can lead people to believe that nothing touches her but in reality she's somebody who prefers to process privately than fall apart in public.

With a sense of humor that borders on black at times, Sawyer is the kind of person you can rely on to make (or at least laugh uncontrollably at) the 'too soon' jokes while using comedy as a way of deflecting from whatever uncomfortable or painful situation is at hand. She's the kind of person who would prefer to acknowledge the elephant in the room rather than tiptoe around a sensitive subject and yet is a hypocrite in the way that she'll change the topic if it ever centers on her own issues.

She's never tried to hide her Shadowkind nature from others, even when facing racism growing up. She had a grandmother who always pointed out that those differences were what made her special, not wrong, that they should be celebrated and not be ashamed of and these lessons greatly shaped her into the person she'd become as an adult. Sawyer is more likely to draw attention to her pointed ears than she is to conceal them and thinks nothing of doing magic in front of others, whether behind closed doors or in public.

Being different growing up, especially when in the care of a human, non-magical grandmother, has seen Sawyer develop something of a thick skin. She doesn't get overly defensive when people react badly to her but she doesn't do anything to make them more comfortable with it either, more likely to flaunt her nature than tone herself down. She strongly believes that they're the ones with the problem, not her. That being said, it could be easy to argue that her eclectic style has evolved because of what she is and how she's been treated. People are likely to stare either way so Sawyer has given them multiple reasons to look.

She bores easily, needing to be challenged in some way in order to stick around which has seen her change jobs numerous times in her thus short life. She can't do the same mundane tasks over and over and needs to be put outside of her comfort zone in order to fully engage. There's almost nothing she won't at least try her hand at, just for the sake of experience but at least she doesn't have to be the best at everything she does, she just needs to be able to say she's done it.

Though it might be going too far to suggest she's shameless, Sawyer's still not somebody who embarrasses easily and while she can't be talked into doing something she doesn't want to do, hair-brained schemes that hold some potential for fun are pretty easy to get her involved in.

Understandably, she has no time or patience for liars. She can accept somebody telling her they have a reason for something but don't want to, or can't talk about it but outright lies or even lies by omission can be seen as unforgivable slights. It's easy to see this as projection; She can't be angry at those who are dead and gone so she takes the feelings of betrayal and unleashes it on those who tell even the most harmless of lies. She's irrational in this regard and on some level, she is aware of that but not enough to make forgiveness come easier.

While she possesses a natural intelligence, Sawyer is far from a know-it-all, having a half-way decent general knowledge but really only knowledgeable in areas that pertain to her interests. Books may have been a childhood escape but as she became more comfortable with herself, she also came to see that life would be wasted spent hidden in the pages of those books. She's more likely to read at a coffee or in her room with music blasting than she is to get lost in the stacks of a library for hours on end.

Physically she's neither strong nor particularly agile and she has an air of laziness about her that sees Sawyer prefer couch-potatoing to running on a treadmill. She knows her strengths and she knows her weaknesses and physicality definitely falls into the latter. She's never going to be the person to win in hand to hand combat but that's where her magic comes in handy.

    Powers and Abilities:

Stat Sheet Which covers the spells she has in her arsenal. Her development in Arcane magic focuses on both combat and non-combative spells that might be useful in combat situations. (Invisibility Sphere, Change Self, Feather Fall etc).

The plan is to develop her towards classes in Archmage.

    Roleplay Samples

Here. I figure there should be a decent amount there by the time her app gets looked at.

Link to a sample of your prose writing style: Do I have to? No seriously you know I can do prose.

Any other important information (including special inventory items in their possession):

Ummm. Some kind of Elven-y trinket that had belonged to her dad, was given to her mother and now belongs to her.

Why do you think this character would join/work with the Knights? While her father would have been a factor in seeking the Knights out, joining is something that would come from Sawyer herself. Whether she realizes it or not, she's a little lost right now and though hardly somebody who appears to need or want grounding, she's never been without strong ties to people or places before now. The Knights would provide her with opportunities to try different things, to travel to new places and yet still give her a sense of home at the end of the day. While you couldn't say that she has a strong sense of duty, she would still latch on to the opportunity to be able to help people with who and what she is and while it wouldn't be the only factor, yes, either finding her father or at the very least, understanding the life he might have led would come into play.

I think Wynn would see the potential in Sawyer. She does have a sense of right and wrong and strong sense that being different doesn't make her or anyone else wrong. She's the kind of person who wouldn't even blink at the sight of a half-dragon and while hardly a social justice warrior for equality, she's almost a walking example of it. She doesn't think she should be treated as special or different anymore than anyone else should be. Her ability to celebrate and own her difference might be the very thing that would catch his eye. He may also see that she's looking for some direction in her life and might suspect that the Knights would give her that and in turn, see her excel rather than flounder.

Do you have a preference for which NPC brought in your character? Sawyer would have sought the Knights out, having learned about them growing up from her Grandmother. What she does know would be very limited however and I imagine it might have taken her some time to track them down, due to the secretive nature of the organisation so it's very likely that she's been following leads on strange happenings and has/will encounter them this way. I don't mind if she's already been brought in or if she comes in on an upcoming mission.
